Didn't God destroy Sodom?

es, God did destroy Sodom, but it wasn’t because people there were gay. You see, God had sent two angels to Sodom to warn Lot about the cities destruction. When the angels visited Lot’s home men (and some argue even women) from all over the town surrounded Lot’s house desiring to gang-rape the angels. This account of Sodom is clearly a story of inhospitality, violence, and rape. To use this story to condemn gays and lesbians in loving, committed relationships is to really stretch it from its true context. Ezekiel 16:48-49 states, “This was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.” Isaiah 1:10-17 refers to the pride and inhospitality of the rulers of Sodom and Gomorrah. Zephaniah 2:8-10 refers to the pride of the people of Sodom and their rejection of God’s people. The Wisdom of Solomon 19:13-14 refers to the inhabitants of Sodom’s “hateful behavior toward strangers.” In Matthew 10:5-15 Jesus compares the inhospitality the disciples would face to that of the inhabitants of Sodom. In his book What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality Daniel A. Helminiak's writes:

“There is a sad irony about the story of Sodom when understood in its own historical setting. People oppose and abuse homosexual men and women for being different, odd, strange or. as they say, 'queer.' Lesbian women and men are just not allowed to fit in. They are made to be outsiders, foreigners in our society. They are disowned by their families, separated from their children, fired from their jobs, evicted from apartments and neighborhoods, insulted by public figures, denounced from the pulpit, vivified on religious radio and TV, and then beaten in the schools and killed on the streets and in the backwoods of our nation. All this is done in the name of religion and supposed Judeo-Christian morality.

Such wickedness is the very sin of which the people of Sodom were guilty. Such cruelty is what the Bible truly condemns over and over again. So those who oppress homosexuals because of the supposed "sin of Sodom" may themselves be the real 'sodomites,' as the Bible understands it."
